|As a young boy Speckled Red learned how to play the church organ. When he was a teenager his family moved to Georgia. He kept on playing piano and organ and he started playing at houseparties and juke joints while he was stil an adolescent. |
In the mid '20s he moved to Detroit and there he kept on playing on parties and night clubs. In 1929 he moved to Memphis. There he first started to record. Made a hit ("The Dirty Dozens") , but his next recording sessions failed to become hits.
So he didn't got any contracts, but made a living playing at parties and in clubs again.
In the early '40s he moved to St. Louis and thus moved into another blues scene.
In the following years he made a few recordings, none of which really became big hits, he made a tour in America and Europe.
In the '60s, being around seventy years old he finally cut back on the numbers of concerts and started only to perform occasioinally. He died in 1973.
Leaves me to tell you that his younger brother is Piano Red.
