    Date born: 1873-11-16
    Date died: 1958-03-28
Place of birth: Muscle Shoals, Alabama, U.S.A.
William Christopher Handy is known as " the father of the blues" He started his musical carreer as a cornetist in a brass band. Also he worked with a vocal quartet. He started to improvise , introducing new angles to the music like the blue notes and leaving in his texts room for improvicing on the end of a line, as well vocally as instrumental. For the history of the blues is imported that he was employed by an election candidate. This resulted in the song: Mr. Crump. Mr. Crump won the elections and W.C. Handy was known all over town. Now the way was open for all those songs we now know as the blues classics. (p.e. "St. Louis Blues" "Beale Street Blues" "Ole Miss" "Yellow Dog Blues) Handy was also the first to name a tune with the word blues in it: Memphis Blues.
