    Scott Joplin

    Date born: 1868-11-24
    Date died: 1917-04-01
Place of birth: Bowie City, Texas, U.S.A.

Ragtime is the predecessor of Jazz and Blues. For it developed into jazz. On the other hand is was the first time black music was recorded and influenced white music. It missed the real improvisation which caracterises the blues.

Scott Joplin was the ragtime's greatist composer and 'Maple Leaf Rag' (published in 1899] it's most popular song, selling over 75.000 copies of sheet music during it's first year.
Joplin soon had many other rags published that helped to make ragtime the pop music of its day, but the tragedy of his life was that his goals were beyond ragtime. He staged a ballet (The Ragtime Dance) and two ragtime operas (The Guest of Honor and Treemonisha) but none were successful, a fact that continually frustrated him. By 1910 Joplin was becoming ill with syphilis and at his death in 1917.
